Owen Carter (they/them) is a multidisciplinary theatre artist, originally hailing from the East Coast, who is very excited to be working with Theatre of the Beat this summer.
As an actor they have worked with many theatre companies across Newfoundland including Terra Bruce Productions, Stephenville Theatre Festival, Untellable Movement Theatre, Resource Centre for the Arts, and three seasons with Perchance Theatre.
In addition to appearing onstage, behind the scenes they have worked in various capacities with Hope and Hell Theatre Co., Breathing Cloud Productions, Resource Centre for the Arts (as a Technical Assistant throughout their 2022-2023 season), and as an ASM for the St. John's Short Play Festival in 2022 (where they directed in the festival the same year).
As a writer, they are continually drawn to masculinity (or lack thereof), wild and messy and inappropriate punctuation; and queer hookup culture. Their first play, ‘puppy teeth.’, which heavily revolves around age gap relationships and child loss in rural Newfoundland, is currently in development with support from ArtsNL, the National Theatre School’s ‘Theatre Engaging Communities’ grant, and Untellable Movement Theatre. Through Untellable Movement Theatre, parts of the ‘puppy teeth.’ script have been adapted into an upcoming virtual reality movement piece. In the fall, one of their poems will be published in the anthology collection ‘Queer Country Crossroads’.
They are entering their third year in the Acting program at the National Theatre School of Canada.
