Safe Hands: Consent and Healthy Boundaries

Theatre of the Beat believes that, if we are to help prevent sexual violence and harassment, we first have to unpack the unspoken norms that allow these injustices to occur.

This workshop explores topics of consent, physical boundaries, and awareness of the types of power imbalances that contribute to gender violence and sexual abuse.

Using techniques from political theatre practitioner, Augusto Boal, Safe Hands actively engages participants through dramatization and role play, empowering confident active bystanders with the skills to unpack the complexities and systemic roots of sexual violence.

WORKSHOP GOALS

In Safe Hands: Consent and Healthy Boundaries you’ll:

  • Recognize how power affects our understanding of consent and permission

  • Understand how personal space/physical boundaries vary by individual and relationship

  • Discuss the pressures of saying and hearing “no” and “yes”

  • Practice the 5 D's of bystander intervention

  • Use Forum Theatre to rehearse what you would say or do in real-life scenarios
